About This Place

Nestled within the charming setting of The Hartshead Inn on Mossley Road, Ego at The Hartshead Inn delivers a dining experience that artfully blends contemporary British fare with vibrant Mediterranean influences. This inviting restaurant is perfect for those seeking a warm yet sophisticated atmosphere, where every meal feels like a celebration of fresh, thoughtfully prepared ingredients.

The cuisine at Ego is beautifully diverse, offering everything from the enticing sizzle of chargrilled Piri Piri Chicken and Cypriot Halloumi to the rich indulgence of a 280g Ribeye Steak or a tender, Roasted Lamb Rump Sunday Roast. Their signature Paella bursts with layers of saffron-infused rice and succulent seafood, while the Gambas Al Pil Pil offers a thrilling kick of garlic and chili that lingers delightfully on the palate. For Sunday roast enthusiasts, the options are both generous and refined — choose from Pan-Roasted Chicken Suprême, 150 Day Grain Fed Roast Beef, or a decadent Trio of Roasts, all perfectly paired with traditional accompaniments.

Dining here is a feast for all the senses. The starters like Chicken Liver Pâté bring smooth, rich textures contrasted beautifully by crisp accompaniments, while dishes such as Salmon & Dill Fishcakes or King Prawn & Chilli Linguine show off a delicate balance of flavors and freshness. Vegetarians are well-catered for too, with thoughtful options like Courgette & Sweetcorn Fritters and Honey-Glazed Baked Feta adding vibrant notes to the menu.

Perhaps most memorable is the dessert selection—a sweet journey in its own right. From a luxuriously creamy Warm Triple Chocolate Brownie to the light, airy Eton Mess, and the impressive combination of Creme Brulee with honeycomb ice cream cited by a delighted diner, the desserts are crafted with an exquisite attention to detail that rounds off any meal perfectly.

But the magic of Ego extends beyond its menu. The attentive, warm service creates a relaxed and welcoming environment where guests can truly unwind and enjoy. Staff members like Evie, Michelle, and Bethany have been highlighted by patrons for their professionalism, genuine charm, and thoughtful service — making every visit feel special no matter the occasion.

Whether you're drawn by the lively Saturday supper club offering great value or a leisurely Sunday roast shared with friends and family, Ego at The Hartshead Inn consistently delivers an experience that resonates with both comfort and quality. Despite some minor critiques, such as the timing of roast potatoes, the overall consensus from guests speaks to a memorable dining experience where flavour and hospitality shine in equal measure.

For a mixture of classic British favourites, Mediterranean zest, and attentive service that doesn't overlook the details, Ego at The Hartshead Inn is a standout destination in Ashton-under-Lyne that invites you to savour every bite and every moment.

Flavour wise the food was great, roast potatoes felt like they had been sitting a while and reheated/ kept warm but it was a 4pm Sunday booking so might be better to aim for when it will be busy. The Chicken Pate and Prawn Cocktails were great starters and tasted good. The desserts were 5 star... The creme brulee was really superb and the honeycomb ice cream was so so good... now, combine the 2.. a small spoonful of that ice cream on a creme brulee would be heaven.. probably very wrong but amazing! As a venue, as always, immaculately presented, all staff friendly, attentive and professional. Connie was fab, attentive and ensured we wanted for nothing. Will be back again!

Visited on Saturday for the first time. They had a Saturday supper club menu deal which was good value. Overall the food was good but personally didn't find it memorable, specially the starters and desserts were a bit below the expectations (both the eton mess and creme brulee weren't particularly nice). However the mains were good. It is worth a visit as the service is good and overall it was a good experience.

From the moment we arrived at Ego Restaurant at the Harts Head Inn in Mossley our evening felt special and a huge part of that was down to Evie. Quite simply her service was nothing short of magical. She welcomed us with genuine warmth and effortless charm and somehow managed to strike that perfect balance between being attentive and letting us relax and enjoy every moment. Evie’s knowledge of the menu was exceptional. She spoke about each dish with such passion and confidence that it felt like being guided through a carefully curated culinary journey rather than just ordering dinner. Her recommendations were absolutely spot on and every plate that arrived was a celebration of flavour beautifully presented and utterly delicious. It was clear she truly understands and loves the food she is serving and that enthusiasm is infectious. The ambience at Ego is already something special but Evie elevated it even further. She made the whole evening flow seamlessly and anticipated our needs before we even had to ask. Glasses were topped up at just the right moment conversations were never interrupted and we always felt genuinely cared for without ever feeling rushed. It is a rare skill and she has mastered it. The combination of outstanding food a warm inviting atmosphere and Evie’s exceptional service turned what should have been a lovely meal into an unforgettable experience. She is a real credit to Ego and the Hart Head Inn and exactly the kind of person who makes you plan your next visit before you have even left. If every restaurant had an Evie dining out would always feel this special.
